NORTH HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The Long Island community of North Hempstead says residents have to pick up after their dogs or pay the price – but exactly what that price is might be a little confusing.
Signs in North Hempstead say the maximum fine for failing to pick up after a dog is $250.
But that is a mistake, according to town code. The actual fine is $25.
Community leaders have been considering raising the fine to what is actually posted. They want to do that instead of footing the bill for replacing hundreds of signs for a crime that is not easy to stop.
“It is hard to enforce, because you actually have to catch the dog in the act in order to give them a citation,” said North Hempstead town spokeswoman Carole Trottere.
On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner was choked to death by a New York City policeman. On December 3, 2014, a grand jury chose not to indict the officer who killed him. And unlike the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, which was murky and muddled at best, Garner’s completely unnecessary death was captured on video.
And what was his crime? As the video below shows (note: it is incredibly disturbing, so watch at your own risk), he wasn’t a mortal threat to anyone. He carried no weapons. He did not shove or attack any police officers in such a way to be considered an imminent threat to their health and safety.
No, his apparent crime was selling cigarettes without paying taxes on them. And for that, he was killed.
Oh, well that explains it all now.
Nothing outside the State!
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School was happy to host a recruiter from the New York National Guard. But they were not happy with some of the swag he was handing out, particularly a t-shirt showing a guardsman holding a rifle. The school dress code bars students from wearing anything depicting a weapon. The recruiter agreed not to hand out anymore of the shirts. The students who’d already gotten one were told they could wear it that day but should not come back to school in it.
So, promoting fighting to defend the state’s interest = good; showing the tools they use to do so = bad.
Homeschool / private school / church school your kids!
And why bother with joining a state militia; in the event of an invasion, or similar threat, just pick up a gun and become a bushwhacker!
Officials with the Arkport, New York, school system say they did not mean to penalize students whose parents took them out of a statewide English test for elementary school students. The school system gave all of the children who took the test ice cream. They gave none to those who didn’t take the test.
Seirra Olivero, 13, says she was suspended for telling other students about their legal rights. Olivero says she told other students at her Sparrowbush, New York, school that did not have to take a state English test. She says a teacher told her to “shut my mouth.” She later got called to the principal’s office and interrogated. When the principal refused to let her call her mother, she left the office. School officials deny Olivero was suspended for telling students they didn’t have to take the test. They say she was suspended for refusing to obey administrators.
